Overview and aim of Engineering Science Open Innovation Program

Engineering Science Open Innovation Program, abbreviated to OI Program or OIP, is a graduate school special educational program with a master and doctoral integrated curriculum for students who wish to enroll in doctoral course at University of Electro-Communications. OI Program are available to students of Department of Engineering Science who wish to enroll in doctoral program. Students who study in any of the four professional programs, electronic engineering, optoelectronics, applied physics, and bioscience and technology can be apply for taking OI program.
The OI Program provides stay-based lab work classes as elective compulsory classes, called open lab work, whose category are experimental and concentration classes. Open lab work classes are conducted at outside-campus research institutes according to OI program curriculum that practices doctoral researcher education with research development ability that fuses various fields.
Open lab work classes train your research skills by staying in three different research institute outside UEC campus and experience new research themes. The research activities of open lab work are shared among OI program students, faculty, and researchers related to the OI program, and they learn knowledge and skills in different fields that other OIP students have studied. OIP students practically learn cutting-edge research and OI program supports their growth into creative doctoral researchers.

Curriculum of OI program

The OI program has unique requirements for completion of the Master's and Doctoral Integrated Curriculums. The requirements for completing the OI program include credits that should be obtained in the regular doctoral course of UEC graduate school. The unique required credits for the OI program include obtaining 12 credits or more in three outside-campus research internship classes called ‘Open Lab Work’. In addition, the seminar classes called ‘Open Innovation School’ is also included in the OI program curriculums of two or more credits. On Open Innovation School classes, students will refine understanding of research subjects through presentations and Q&A sessions on research topics they have worked on through open lab work.

Open lab works of OI program

Since OI program was established in 2015, more than 20 open lab work classes have been provided. The research themes on open lab work were set for each OIP student. National research institutes that represent Japan in their respective fields of expertise, and Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies are involved as the lab work site of open lab work classes. Research institutes that have been conducting open lab work outside UEC campus are listed below. These institutes that collaborate with OI program can be said to be Tama Education and Research Site Network of UEC Tokyo.

Host institutes of open lab work classes

Open Innovation school class: OI school

On OI School classes the class students will present the research background, research methods, and results obtained through open lab work learned about the research topics addressed in open lab work in a seminar format. Researchers and program students involved in the OI program participate in the OI School to deepen their understanding of research through presentations and Q&A sessions.
From fiscal 2015 to 2018, OI Schools were held at the Hachioji Seminar House in collaboration with the Joint Colloquium of the Three Universities in the Tama Area, which is organized by students from the University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.
The OI School of fiscal 2020 was held as an online live event.

Unique Master’s thesis, and enrollment to Doctor course

Students in the OI program will submit their master's thesis with a different content than regular curriculum master course students. Reports on the research themes of open lab work classes, which are compulsory subjects in the OI program curriculum, must be submitted as a master's thesis, and a master's thesis presentation will be held. Since two or more open lab work has been taken during the two years of the master's program, two or more research themes must be included in the master's thesis.
To enroll to a doctoral course of department of Engineering Science, students must take and pass the graduate school entrance examination of doctoral course with completion of the requirement for master's course. It is important to prepare to start doctoral research during the master's course.
